Finishing a new house or renovation is exciting, but the building work leaves dust, debris and residue everywhere. Before you move in, the property needs a thorough post-construction clean. Use this checklist to make sure nothing is missed, whether you clean it yourself or hire a professional team.
Before you start
- Make sure the contractors have finished in the areas being cleaned
- Ask the contractor to remove large construction waste and leftover materials
- Check that water and electricity are working
- Open windows to let dust escape and fresh air in
- Wear gloves and a dust mask, especially when sweeping fine dust
Work from top to bottom
Dust falls as you clean, so always start high and finish with the floors. Cleaning the floors first means doing them twice.
Room-by-room checklist
Ceilings, walls and fittings
- Remove cobwebs and dust from ceilings and corners
- Wipe dust from walls, especially along the tops of tiles
- Clean light fittings, fans and air conditioner covers
- Wipe switches, sockets and door handles
Windows and glass
- Remove stickers and labels from glass
- Clean paint and cement spots carefully to avoid scratching
- Clean frames, tracks and sills, where fine dust collects
- Clean glass inside and, where it is safe to reach, outside
Kitchen
- Clean inside and outside all cupboards and drawers
- Wipe worktops, splashbacks and the sink
- Clean the outside of new appliances and remove protective film
Bathrooms
- Remove grout haze and cement residue from tiles
- Clean toilets, basins, showers and tubs
- Polish taps, mirrors and glass shower screens
Floors
- Sweep and vacuum all loose dust and debris
- Remove paint spots and cement residue
- Wash the floors, changing the water often
- Consider polishing tiles, terrazzo, marble or wooden floors for a finished shine
Stairs, balconies and outside
- Clean stairs, balustrades and railings
- Sweep and wash balconies and terraces
- Sweep and wash the compound and entrances
Final checks
- Walk through every room in daylight and look for missed spots
- Check inside cupboards and wardrobes
- Run taps and flush toilets to clear any dust
- Make sure all waste has been removed from the property
